2019 Stout Family Sommelier Series "Special Selections"

Guy had the opportunity to collaborate with our winemaker, Tom Rinaldi, on a selection of barrel lots that represent what he thinks Napa Valley does best – Bordeaux varieties. The 3 bottle Series consists of three interpretations of Bordeaux style and my firsthand experiences there.

  • The “Left Bank” is a heavy Cabernet Sauvignon base with a small percentage of Merlot and Cabernet Franc
  • The “Right Bank” is a base of Cabernet Franc and Merlot
  • The Garagiste – “Garage Wine” or Wild Child is based on Petite Verdot with Merlot and Cabernet Franc

Cabernet Sauvignon, Special Selection
This wine originates from a single vineyard on the eastern side of Napa Valley, nestled at the foot of the Vaca Mountain range. It exhibits a deep, rich ruby color, with aromas of red roses and earthy minerals. A volcanic element infuses the wine, accompanied by hints of baking spice clove, iron, and blackberry fruit. The palate is firm and rich, showcasing a well-balanced oak intensity. Big, ripe, and juicy, the wine features firm tannins and a moderately long finish.

Cabernet Franc, Special Selection
This wine features a deep ruby hue, enriched by ripe blackberry fruit. It offers hints of floral aromas, including violets and potpourri, with a slight herbal edge of Earl Grey tea and green peppercorn, all enveloped in an opulent core of black fruit. The addition of Merlot softens the sharper edges of the Cabernet Franc. This dry wine is complemented by a rounded richness from French oak, balanced with firm tannins, and concludes with a long, rich finish.

Petit Verdot, Special Selection
This wine boasts a dark purple hue that elegantly stains the side of your glass. It is expertly blended with a touch of Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The Cabernet Franc contributes an aromatic complexity and a firm spice, while the Merlot imparts a smooth roundness to the mid-palate. Petit Verdot, often not labeled as a varietal, plays a dominant role here, demonstrating that a little goes a long way. "Density" truly defines this wine. For those unfamiliar with this classic Bordeaux variety, this deep, dark, juicy wine will be a delightful surprise. Aged for two years in French oak, it is dense, rich, and utterly luscious.
